The Biology of Spring: Why Spring Can Make You Feel Restless

Every year, something subtle begins to shift as winter gives way to spring. The light lingers longer in the evening, birds return, and the landscape slowly reawakens. But this seasonal change isn’t just happening around us, it’s happening within us.

Spring marks a biological reset.

As daylight increases, our bodies begin producing less melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep and winter’s slower rhythms. With more light entering the eyes and signaling the brain, circadian rhythms start to recalibrate. Energy rises. Motivation returns. Creativity and curiosity often follow close behind.

In many ways, the body begins preparing for a more active season, and sometimes that transition can look like an unexpected sense of restlessness or urgency.

You may feel a desire for change without knowing exactly what needs to change. You might feel more sensitive, more energized, or slightly unsettled—like something is moving internally but hasn’t yet taken shape.

Part of this experience comes from the fact that the body often wakes up faster than the nervous system is ready for:

Biologically, the increase in light and environmental stimulation begins activating systems associated with movement, exploration, and engagement with the world. But the nervous system—especially after the slower rhythms of winter—may need more time to adjust to this shift.

This mismatch can create a feeling many people recognize in early spring:

🌷Heightened energy
🌷Scattered thoughts
🌷A pull toward change
🌷A lack of clarity about what comes next

Here’s the thing: we want to remind you that this is part of nature’s rhythm. Nature rarely shifts overnight. Buds form before leaves appear, and soil warms slowly before seeds begin to grow.

So if you’re feeling a rush of energy and motivation, yet feeling discouraged or restless, we want to invite you to sit with the word emergence.

Because thats what Spring is really about…blossoming, emergence, awakening. Happening in real time. The energy of the season begins with stirring possibilities before the direction becomes clear.

So enjoy the thawing, the slow unfolding and inspiration.

And ask yourself:

What feels complete from the past season?

What feels ready to grow?

What ideas, curiosities, or longings are quietly surfacing?

When we give ourselves space to move through this transition slowly, the restlessness of spring can shift into something else—a deeper sense of inspiration, renewal, and patience with the process.

Spring is not asking us to have already completed it all.

It’s asking us to notice what is beginning to come alive.
